New Water Bottle Deposit In New York

5 cent deposit on all new bottles water
By: P.J. Wascher

Syracuse, New York - A new bottle deposit tax took affect October 31st in New York. People will now have to pay an extra five cents for any bottle of water under a gallon, and receive their money back after the bottle is recycled. This will cost two dollars more for the traditional twenty-four pack of water. This is already done with bottles and cans of Soda in New York.

Frustrated Grocery Stores

The additional bottle deposit was made possible after U.S. District Judge Deborah Batts issued an order lifting an injunction on the deposits last Friday. This gave grocery stores a week to change their water bottle stock with to get proper label. Nichols Grocery Store owner, Mike Hennigan was frustrated with the short notice to change their inventory.

“This is New York state in the fact that they given the entire food industry, via the supermarket, convenience stores, drug stores, less than a week to be in compliance, and that is the main frustration point.” Hennigan says.

Mike says grocery store owners will have to send back all their water supply to their distributors. If they are found with any water without the proper labels in the store there will be a $100 fine.

Consumer Notice

Only bottles of water will be subject to the new deposit tax. Flavored bottles of water will not be included. You will only receive five cents for bottles purchase after October 31st. People cannot receive money back for bottles without the proper labeling. 80% of the unclaimed deposits will go to the State, desperate for new revenue.
